I have always loved Word Search puzzles. For many years I sat with graph paper from dad laying out puzzles in unique shapes. In those times, handing out my hard work meant that puzzle was used…

In case I’m jumping ahead of myself, Word Search does ring a bell right? From Wikipedia: A word search, word find, word seek, word sleuth or mystery word puzzle is a word game that is letters of a word in a grid, that usually has a rectangular or square shape. The object of the game is to find and mark all of the words hidden in the grid. The words may have been placed horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They may have been written backwards or not. Often a list of the hidden words is provided, but more challenging puzzles may let the player figure them out. Many word search puzzles have a theme to which all the hidden words are related.

Today’s computers make it much easier to layout puzzles using any word processor app. Making things even easier is many automated online services available for free. From simple engines that you insert you list of words and out comes a grid of letters to use, to several more advanced options that let you choose outline shape, font, etc…

On the more simple side is the Discovery folks. Not much to customize, but you can just paste your words in on window instead of having to enter each search word one at a time.

You have to enter each word into a individual box, but they make up for the effort with many many customizable options. If your having a time coming up with a list of words, these folks offer large lists to use too.

Finally, A to Z Teacher Stuff offers a single word entry box and many options to make the puzzle all your own. Their pull down list of puzzle shapes is quite impressive.

The strength of a single word can be enhanced with font, shadow, and depth. When typing text in a social network site, your limited to basic text. But, when sending a letter, printing, or heading a article – a more robust lettering will enrich the word message.

Here is a simple word enhanced to encourage the joy of the single word. There are many programs you can have on your desktop to create word energy… usually these are ‘logo’ creation apps.. One company I saw offer their single word enhancement software to use for free online – no download. Take a look at “XARA 3D Sampler”
